Dorrie Braun is a Pasadena native and co-founder and Executive Director of the Lyric Theatre.
My theatre career began in high school when I formed a production company called Braun & Agnew Productions with a friend. We produced plays and musicals at our school and neighboring schools. I was also the president of the drama club and loved every minute of being on stage.
Once I reached college at Stanford, I majored in music (piano and voice) while forming another production company called Prima Donna Productions where I appeared in my favorite musical, “Applause,” as the head of the gypsies. I then went to USC Law Center for my Juris Doctor in 1980 and passed the bar the same year.
As if that wasn’t enough (I must have loved school!), I went on to receive a Masters in Music at Claremont Graduate University in voice, during which time I had two of my sons, including Laurence, who serves as the other executive director of the Lyric.
During the years I was raising my children, I taught music and musical theatre, ran a number of arts and education organizations and was involved in local government arts (Founding Chairman of the Pasadena Arts Commission). I also did a lot of singing, the highlight of which included a performance of the National Anthem at Dodger Stadium while I was pregnant with my third son, Ryan. In addition, I studied acting in a Meisner program at the Laura Henry Acting Studio.
In 2006, I founded the Lyric Theatre Foundation to pursue my first professional love, musical theatre, by presenting classic and contemporary musicals and occasional nonmusical comedy and drama. I wanted to create a place that encouraged artistic growth and welcomed newcomers, both young and old. Since that day, I have produced and performed in “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change,” “The Fantastiks” and “The Gingerbread Lady” at the Hudson Theatre on Santa Monica Blvd. I can’t wait to start producing shows at the Lyric!
