Dan O’Brien was born in Boston and now resides in Playa Del Rey. O’Brien is the Artistic Director of the Lyric Theatre and is responsible for overseeing all artistic aspects of the theatre including the 2007 season.
Theatre was something that I enjoyed doing in middle school, but I assumed I would quit when I got to high school because I always fancied myself an athlete. Of course, I'm all of 5'7'' and I didn't really stand out at basketball tryouts. So my best friend, Michael Buckley, convinced me to audition for a winter show at our high school. I missed the first day of auditions and I didn’t have a monologue, so I wrote my own monologue in math class and read it for the director. It was bad. Real bad. Long story short, I was cast by some miracle and we ended up winning the state championship at the Massachusetts High School Drama Festival, performed at a New England festival in Maine and were invited to perform at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival at Brandies University. I was hooked after that show. Our director, Brother Ron Santoro C.F.X., turned my passing interest in theatre into a burning passion for the arts. He demanded hard work, creativity, and dedication, all traits that I developed while producing shows.
Plus, I went to an all-male high school and the only way to meet women was to do plays! I went to St. Johns a soccer fanatic who enjoyed being on stage and I left knowing that there was only one thing that I could even consider studying in college. So I turned down offers to play soccer at a few Division III schools and I went to Boston College to study Theatre Arts.
My goal as the artistic director of The Lyric is to find the next great American playwright. I want to provide young and talented writers, actors, and designers their first opportunities to make a name for themselves. I want the Lyric to be on the cutting edge of the American theatre scene. |
